Things I Considered in My Text Selection: Pre-made activities, lessons, vocabulary lists, & listening activities I received input from my Health Academy Director to plan around what the students were studying in the academy

Examples: Activities & Lessons

Healthcare Professional/Patient ID Badge: Identifying/introducing self & others Present tense of the verb “Ser” Forming questions Months & dates in Spanish Spanish surnames Descriptive adjectives Describing self & others Medical professions/positions Titles preceding names

Medical Clinic Patient Files

Patient Files Lesson* *Resource is available on Teachers Pay Teachers under Señora Sheffler (Amber Sheffler, NBCT,  South Hagerstown High School in Washington County Public Schools, Maryland)

Successes & Challenges

Successes & Challenges Increased Enrollment

Student Survey Results 100% felt that taking Medical Spanish will be useful in future endeavors 92% would take more LSP courses if offered 69% felt the class prepared them to communicate with non-English speaking patients

LSP Awareness Local Newspaper Coverage Creates Conversations in the professional arena State Level (FLDOE) recognition of the need for LSP courses Open doors for Global Community Service Projects

District Level Awareness Creation of an End of Term (EOT) exam exclusively for the classes with the medical LSP material requested by the principal to support the course. Gives validity to the course and it’s contents

Curriculum Finding time to incorporate the LSP material in with content area Students wanting more LSP content in the course Time to create engaging activities Course code at state level to give course more validity on transcripts

Student Survey Results 15% felt the course did not include enough medical information Not tested enough on medical information Learning medical information in LSP class before learning them in Content Area

What’s Next? Research of a state course code for an LSP course for Healthcare (must be through the Health Science Career Cluster) Create a collaboration network for schools who wish to implement or have implemented Spanish for health care Provide support to those individuals wanting to offer these courses at their schools

What’s Next? (cont.) Provide a network where lesson plans are shared with others: http://nble.org/ebook/ Partnering with Career Academies disseminating this model

Professional Development Attended a 4 Week Medical Spanish Program at Pop Wuj Spanish School Guatemala (June 2017) Received an International Grant from Delta Kappa Gamma International ($2,000.00) Partnered with the local Rotary International and received a scholarship ($500.00) Received curriculum writing funding from the University of Florida Center for Latin American Studies ($500.00)

Professional Development (cont.) This opportunity allowed me to Analyze and evaluate the Medical Spanish 1 &2 Curriculum Partner with other organizations in our community And most importantly…

Professional Development (cont.) Apply the curriculum in a relevant, real world setting and share the experience with the students

Crystal River High School Academy of Health Careers

Global Community Service Project… Connecting Students Medical Spanish students participated in a Skype Q & A session with the director of Pop Wuj to learn about the mission, programs and impact the school has on the Guatemalan community Students raised $323.00 to donate to Pop Wuj Clinic that was used to support a special needs youth

Global Community Service Project (cont.) Volunteering at the clinic allowed me to model responsible citizenship for my students Students connected and interacted with the experience through a blog: http://thejoseyjournal.com/ Students are scheduled to participate in a presentation and question/answer forum about the experience
