Form 6 Autumn Term

Brief Agenda Information about this term’s learning Recap of important information Questions

This Term’s Project We are studying a new project (“Shackleton’s Journey”) this half term. In English, we will be using William Grill’s book, Shackleton’s Journey, as a focus text, introducing the pupils to the life and work of explorer Ernest Shackleton and his voyage across Antarctica. The pupils’ writing will include work on letters (correspondence/persuasive writing), biographies and descriptive pieces/narratives. We will use extended writing lessons to ensure coverage of the curriculum for Upper Key Stage 2 writing. Other lessons will include studying the context of the topic (history of exploration/discovery; the geography of Antarctica and biomes/ecosystems across the world). Maths, Science, R.E. and English Grammar (inc. spellings and punctuation) will be taught separately from the project.

Maths Maths this term will begin with revision of place value and written methods of calculation (addition, subtraction, multiplication, division). We will also cover work with fractions and decimals (including money calculations): read, write, order and compare numbers up to 10,000,000 and determine the value of each digit round any whole number to a required degree of accuracy use negative numbers in context, and calculate intervals across 0 solve number and practical problems that involve all of the above multiply multi-digit numbers up to 4 digits by a two-digit whole number using the formal written method of long multiplication divide numbers up to 4 digits by a two-digit whole number using the formal written method of long division, and interpret remainders as whole number remainders, fractions, or by rounding, as appropriate for the context perform mental calculations, including with mixed operations and large numbers use their knowledge of the order of operations to carry out calculations involving the 4 operations solve addition and subtraction multi-step problems in contexts, deciding which operations and methods to use and why

Spelling, Punctuation and Grammar We will have weekly lessons on spelling, punctuation and grammar (SPaG), covering the range of topics included on the Upper Key Stage 2 English curriculum. We will begin with the “basics” (types of nouns, verbs, adjectives, punctuation) before moving to conjunctions (including coordinating conjunctions and subordinating conjunctions). Work will also be included on pronouns (he, she, it, they etc.) and relative clauses. Spellings will be introduced weekly and tested each Friday (we will revisit this later).

Science Our focus this half-term is on “Light”, including how light travels, reflects and is absorbed, the different materials that are most effective in reflecting/absorbing light, and how shadows are formed. R.E. We are learning about Sikhism this half-term, including what Sikhs believe, their commitments and values (the 5Ks) and the features of a Gurdwara.

PE/Dance Dance lessons will take place on Wednesdays – please ensure that children have their P.E. kits! A second P.E. lesson will be taught by me each week – this will possibly happen on Tuesday afternoons, depending on kit availability, whether the gym is free etc.

Homework Homework will be sent out on Wednesdays, to be returned by the following Monday (English and Maths). Spellings will be sent out on Mondays via a “Spellings Book” – the children should learn each spelling by covering the word and practice writing it out in the grid provided. They should also write a sentence for each word on the list (the more exciting, the better!) Spellings will be tested on Fridays. It is highly important that pupils take their homework seriously (particularly the spellings). Please support them if there is anything they need help with, and remind them to return their homework on time.
