TGs Dallas Closing Report November 2008 doc.: IEEE P802.11-08/1369r0 November 2008 TGs Dallas Closing Report Date: 2008-11-13 Authors: Donald Eastlake 3rd, Motorola Donald Eastlake 3rd, Motorola

November 2008 doc.: IEEE P802.11-08/1369r0 November 2008 Abstract Report of TGs, Mesh Networking Task Group, to the November 2008 (Dallas, Texas) closing 802.11 Plenary. TGs Motto: Perfection is achieved not when there is nothing left to add but when there is nothing left to take away. Donald Eastlake 3rd, Motorola Donald Eastlake 3rd, Motorola

TGs Closing Plenary Report November 2008 doc.: IEEE P802.11-08/1369r0 November 2008 TGs Closing Plenary Report TGs is improving its Draft by resolving the comments on its failed Letter Ballot #126. The current general comment resolution spread sheet is 11-08/493r27. TGs has a new Temporary Editor: Kazuyuki Sakoda (Sony) Donald Eastlake 3rd, Motorola Donald Eastlake 3rd, Motorola

Summary of LB #126 Comment Resolution November 2008 Summary of LB #126 Comment Resolution   Techncial Editorial Total Thru Jacksonville 177 13% 297 50% 474 24% Thru Denver 333 450 75% 783 40% Thru Waikoloa 942 69% 564 94% 1506 77% Thru Dallas  Tbd Tbd TOTAL Comments 1365 70% 599 30% 1964 100% Remaining Donald Eastlake 3rd, Motorola

November 2008 802.11s Timeline TGs is a broad amendment which affects many parts of the Standard, but not the PHY. PAR approved: 5/13/2004 Draft D0.01: 3/12/2006 1st LB (#93): 12/7/2006 (same delay from PAR as TGn) D1.0: Approval rate 48% 5,713 comments, about ½ Editorial and ½ Technical 2nd LB (#126): 3/15/2008 D2.0: Approval rate 61% 1,964 comments, about 1/3 Editorial and 2/3 Technical Donald Eastlake 3rd, Motorola

802.11s Activity & Deployment November 2008 802.11s Activity & Deployment Activity Level: Although attendance normally declines precipitously when a Task Group is in comment resolution, TGs attendance here is in the 20 to 30 range (even at the TGs ad hoc meeting at 08:00 Monday morning). This indicates a high level of interest. At its Līhu‘e ad hoc and the following Waikoloa meeting, TGs resolved 723 comments. Deployment of 802.11s has been limited by the fact that there has been no public draft… Donald Eastlake 3rd, Motorola

November 2008 802.11s Deployment Biggest 802.11s success so far: inexpensive computers targeted at the educational / 3rd world market. ~500,000 One Laptop Per Child XO “$100” computers http://laptop.org The 2nd generation Intel Classmate PC has “full MESH 802.11s support” http://www.intel.com/intel/worldahead/pdf/CMPCbrochure.pdf Linux 2.6.26+ incorporates the Open802.11s Project 802.11s software, which implies over ~500,000,000 units eventually (but maybe that’s cheating) http://www.open80211s.org/trac Donald Eastlake 3rd, Motorola

802.11s Deployment Other shipping products: November 2008 802.11s Deployment Other shipping products: Motorola MeshConnex “pre-s” stations come with a promise of upgrade to the final 802.11s standard. Proxim ORINOCO AP-4000 products using 802.11s backhaul are shipping and in use at CERN and other sites. PacketHop has announced availability of 802.11s systems. Saxnet has 802.11s availability on its multi-radio Linux based product. Ovislink’s WL500AP Router supports the 802.11s draft. Arada’s wireless mesh networking solution is based on the 802.11s draft. Donald Eastlake 3rd, Motorola

802.11s Deployment Quotations: November 2008 802.11s Deployment Quotations: “I think mesh as an indoor technology is going to find wide acceptance” – Bob O’Hara (www.wi-fiplanet.com) “If mesh is easy enough to deploy, everybody will use it …” – Adam Conway of Aerohive Networks.
