The Structure of Feudalism

The Path to Knighthood - Page A boy would start as a page (servant) at the age of 7 and live at the castle of his lord, who was usually a relative During the first stage of their training, the boys would serve the ladies of the manor and were taught how to sing, dance, and play the harp

The Path to Knighthood - Squire After 7 years as a page, a boy would then become a squire who would polish his lord’s weapons and equipment as well as tend to his horses and serve him food A squire also received weapons training with swords, battle-axes, maces, and lances

The Path to Knighthood - Knight In his early 20’s a squire could become a knight if he was deemed worthy and he was knighted in a special ceremony Knights lived by the code of chivalry where you were loyal to the church and your lords, cared for the poor, and treated women with kindness

The Path to Knighthood - Knight Jousting and tournaments were a major part of knighthood Knights wore a full suit of armor and usually rode on horseback on the fields on battle Knights were the primary means of combat until the discovery of gunpowder hundreds of years later
