Bell Work 1-21-15 Sometimes countries quickly build up their military, what’s that called? After Franz Ferdinand’s assassination, what caused a domino effect of country’s joining the war? England remained neutral for a while, what caused them to join the war?

US isn’t in WWI, yet. Americans have a policy of isolationism. Britain blockaded the North German Coast– no supplies leaving Germany. Germans create their own blockade of submarines (U-Boats).

German U-Boats Germans vowed to stop any British ship holding goods. 1915, Germans sink a British ship. It held 130 innocent Americans. It was the Lusitania.

Lusitania sunk US president Wilson was angered by the Germans and threatened them with economic sanctions. Now German U-Boats MUST surface before launching torpedoes.

US still not in the War Many Americans actually sided with the Germans. UNTIL, The British intercepted a German Telegram that was meant for Mexico. Zimmermann Note.

In the note Zimmermann asks Mexico to plot against the Americans. In return, Germany plans to help Mexico get land they lost to the Americans.

US shown the note President Wilson declares war on Germany.
