Using Playing Cards to Support Mathematical Understanding Dad’s Breakfast

Using the cards First, take out the picture cards (King, Queen and Jack) so that you have the numbers 1 (Ace) to 10. If using Uno cards, take out the instruction cards.

Number Bonds to 10 and 20 Shuffle the cards, turn over the pack and pick up cards one at a time. As you pick up the card, ask the child for the bond to 10. E.g. You pick up 3, your child says 7. The aim is to pick up the pace so it is automatic This can be extended to bonds to 20 by using a 1 card to make a 10.

Doubling numbers to 10 and 20 Much the same as the number bonds, pick up a card and your child has to double it. This can be extended to doubling numbers to 20 by using a 1 card to make the 10. Double Double Double Double

Place Value Pick 2 cards from the pack and lay them down to make a 2 digit number. Ask your child which one is the 10s digit, which one is the units. Extend to 3 or 4 digit numbers. Pick 3 cards out of the pack – What is the biggest number you can make? What is the smallest? How do you know?

Adding and Subtracting Pick 2 cards, children have to add or subtract them as quickly as possible This can be extended to using 3 cards for adding + = - =

Multiplying Focus on one times table - pick up cards one at a time and ask your child to multiply them as quickly as possible x x x x
