1 Welcome to THE Y5 Parental workshop
Mathematics

2 Today we are going to be looking at teaching times tables
Key steps Build the multiplication table Chanting times tables aloud Noticing and investigating Games 8 Times Tables

3 Build the multiplication table 8 x table
Let’s start with 0 because zero times any whole number is zero. 0 x 8 = 0 I know 10 x 8 = 80 because a number multiplied by 10 moves one place to the left and has a place holder of 0. If I know that 10 x 8 = 80, then I can use halving to find 5 x 8 = 40

4 Build the multiplication table 8 x table
1 x 8 = 8 If I know 1 x 8 = 8 then I double it to find 2 x 8 = 16 Now to find 4 x 8 I can double 2 x 8 = 16 so 4 x 8 = 32 Now I can double again so if 4 x 8 = 32, 8 x 8 = 64

5 Build the multiplication table 8 x table

6 Build the multiplication table 8 x table
I know 2 x 8 = 16, then I can add 8 to find 3 x 8 = 24 If I know 3 x 8 = 24, then I can use doubling to find 6 x 8 = 48. I can double again to find 12 x 8 = 96

7 Build the multiplication table 8 x table
Now to find 9 x 8 I could add 8 to 8 x 8 Or I could subtract 8 from 10 x 8 Or I could add 3 x 8 and 6 x 8 I know that 11 is (10 lots and 1 lot), so 11 x 8 must be which is 88 (10 x 8) + (1 x 8) = 11 x 8 9 x 8 = 72

8 Build the multiplication table 8 x table
Now to find 7 x 8 I could add 8 to 6 x 8 … Or I could add 2 x 8 and 5 x 8 (2 x 8) + (5 x 8) = 7 x 8 7 x 8 = 56 The one the children always forget!!

9 Build the multiplication table 8 x table

10 chant the multiplication table 8 x table
Let’s chant the multiplication table – Keep it lively! Zero times 8 is 0 One times 8 is 8 Two times 8 is 16 Say it in a squeaky voice, loud voice, funny voice etc. Chant table tennis.

11 noticing the multiplication table 8 x table
Ask the children “What do you notice?” Look at the tens digit in the product: Multiplying by 1,2,3,4,5- the answer starts with one less. Multiplying by 6,7,8,9,10- the answer starts with two less. (8 x 3 = 24) (8 x 6 = 48) Every 5 rows, the ones digit follows the pattern: 8, 6, 4, 2, 0 This repeats over and over. They are all in the four times table All of the 8 times table are even.
