2 ADDITION AND SUBTRACTION USING NEGATIVE NUMBERS A number line is very useful when you have to do additions or subtractions which involve negatives numbers. Adding a negative numbers is the same as subtracting a positive number eg -2 + - 9 = -2 – 9eg -4 - (+6) = -4 - 6 = - 11 = -10 Subtracting a negative number is the same as adding a positive number eg 12 - - 8 = 12 + 8eg -2 – (-8) = -2 + 8 = 20 = 6
