DO NOW! According to “An Appeal to Congress on Women’s Suffrage:” What is the meaning of the word Aphorism? Which ethnic groups were Un-enfranchised in the U.S. in 1917? Where would you find this appeal if it weren’t in your workbook? Are there any aphorisms located in this room? What is one of them?

LEARNING TARGET I CAN write arguments to support claims in an analysis of substantive topics or texts, using valid reasoning supported by relevant and sufficient evidence.

WHY IS THIS IMPORTANT? I must practice pointing out the strengths and limitations of both in a manner that anticipates the audience's knowledge level and concerns.

TASK DON’T FORGET: 1. INTRODUCTION WRITE YOUR CLAIM STATE YOUR POSITION; PRO OR CON STATE THREE REASONS 2. BODY SUPPORT YOUR REASONS 3. CONCLUSION RESTATE THE CLAIM WRITE YOUR OPINION 1. You will respond by writing a practice essay on the following claim in the composition book provided: CLAIM: According to Catt, Ethnic women, such as immigrants and those living in the slums, were excluded from her appeal for the right to vote. 2.FIRST PLAN: USING A Bubble Map, Outline, or Tree Map, etc. 3. You may use your workbook to cite evidence from the text: “Address to Congress on Women Suffrage” by Catt. 3. You have until 3 minutes before class ends to write.

TREE MAP Ethnic groups clearly were: Con ( I disagree with Catts appeal) Ethnic groups clearly were: Excluded from her plea. Discrimated against disrepected She argued for White women immigrants & people all women fall under suffrage living in the slums the rights of the U.S. were excluded She referenced these women many ethnic groups worked many immigrants and as capable of being in govern- tirelessly in White homes and people living in slums ment positions & other domestic areas helped build this country

SUGGESTION: Introduction According to Catt, Ethnic women, such as immigrants and those living in the slums, were excluded from her appeal for the right to vote. In other words, her appeal only pertained to the rights of White women. Clearly, her stance was unfair. I deplore this claim as stated by Catt. Ethnic groups during this time period were clearly discriminated against, treated with disrespect and many of her statements were racists.

CLOSURE MAKE CERTAIN YOUR NAME AND PERIOD IS ON THE INSIDE COVER OF YOUR COMPOSITION BOOK. RE-CHECK YOUR WRITING: SENTENCE STRUCTURE, GRAMMAR AND PUNCTUATION. LEAVE YOUR COMPOSITION BOOK IN THE CRATE/BOX PROVIDED.
