1 DO NOW! Respond to all the questions; be prepared for POP-Ups!
1. How is literature a means of social commentary? 2. Who are two famous women who have fought for women’s rights? 3. Do women still struggle for equality today ? 4. Recall a march, movement, etc., for women’s rights; what was the outcome?

2 Rhetorical appeals, the devices can be used to develop claims.
LEARNING TARGET: I can understand Rhetorical appeals, the devices can be used to develop claims.

3 WHY IS THIS IMPORTANT? The lesson will require me to analyze the text for how the author develops the claim. View Pres. Trump Speech Video - On C-SPAN Watch Clips Online - c-span.org Evidence Reasoning (Why is this evidence important?) He responded to the recent violence in Charlottesville, Virginia, that resulted from a white nationalist protest and left one woman dead and 20 injured. President Trump said the country needed to unify against racist violence He explicitly condemned the white nationalist and neo-Nazi groups that were marching in Charlottesville He said the Justice Department would pursue charges against any perpetrators of racist violence.

4 CLAIMS REASONS EVIDENCE
EVALUATING CLAIMS JUSTIFICATION A CLAIM is what the writer is trying to prove. Example: Congress should pass a constitutional amendment giving women the right to vote by convincing state legislatures to ratify it in 1920. GROUNDS: prejudice, suffrage, White-supremacy, and sexism to obtain suffrage on both the state and federal levels, and to compromise for partial suffrage in the states resisting change. an appeal to the prejudices of the time; uneducated immigrants be stripped of their right to vote - the United States should "cut off the vote of the slums and give it to women.

5 Tasks: ENGLISH 10: Annotate the “Address to Congress on Women’s Suffrage” by Carrie C. Catt, p.18 HONORS: Complete the vocabulary words in your workbook, p. 6, with a partner. AP: complete text dependent ?’s:

6 continuing at full strength or force
without becoming weaker Expressing a truth Or principle All the way between these immortal aphorisms political leaders have declared unabated faith in their truth. Not one American has arisen to question their logic in the 141 years of our national existence. However stupidly our country may have evaded the logical application at times, it has never swerved from its devotion to the theory of democracy as expressed by those two axioms... a statement that is taken to be true, to serve as a premise

7 TEXT DEPENDENT QUESTIONS: Pre-ap remember to cite evidence from text
1. Based on the author’s citations within the text, what should the relationship between the people and the government of a nation be? Use specific evidence from the text to support your response. 2. Summarize the reasons the author uses to justify establishing women’s suffrage. 3. The author uses the word “inevitable” often in the text. What is the meaning of this word and why does the author choose to use this word as opposed to an alternative? 4. Reread paragraph 20, what is the author’s purpose as it is expressed in this section? 5. In paragraphs 9-12 and 17-19, the author uses a repetitive structure. What impact does this have on the text? Use evidence from the text to support your response.

8 Closure: RESPOND IN YOUR SPIRAL NOTEBOOKS
Define claims and how YOU will use them to select a research topic and write a research project. EXAMPLE: I will prove that hate groups should be captured and imprisoned for their violent actions against ethnic groups.
