2 Persuasive vs. Argumentative
The writer aims to share their opinion or preference The writer states what they think and why they think it Supports rely solely on opinion and feelings Argumentative The writer aims to get the reader to accept their perspective or side of the truth Relevant reasons and credible data are blended to demonstrate the writer’s argument as valid Arguments rely on logical reasons that are validated by facts, data, expert quotes, and evidence.

3 How to get started? Explore/research a topic of focus
After conducting initial research, align with the strongest side and determine a claim What is a claim? A claim is the main argument. A counterclaim is the opposite of the argument, or the opposing argument. Determine reasons for claim A reason tells why the claim is made and is supported by the evidence. Rank your reasons Most argumentative essays should have at least three main reasons supporting the claim. Find evidence that supports your reasons Evidence is the facts or research to support your claim.

7 Body Paragraph 3 The third body paragraph should be the counterclaim
Remember the counterclaim is the opposite of the argument, or the opposing argument. Discuss the opposite claim and reasons others would support that claim

8 Conclusion Restate thesis
Discuss what’s at stake if the reader doesn’t agree with you
