Eating Disorders

What is an Eating Disorder? An eating disorder is a mental disorder in which a person has a compelling need to starve, binge, or purge

Binge To eat large amounts over a short period of time

To get rid of food by vomiting or laxatives Purge* To get rid of food by vomiting or laxatives

What are the two main types of eating disorders?

2 main types Anorexia Nervosa Bulimia

Anorexia Anorexia nervosa is an eating disorder in which a person starves himself/herself and weighs 15 percent or more below desirable weight

Anorexia Many teens with anorexia are obsessed with being thin, perfection, and exercise People with anorexia are often great people who begin to lie and deny any problems

Anorexia Treatment for Anorexia often require a team of professionals, including: doctors, nurses, dietitians, and mental health professionals

Bulimia Bulimia is an eating disorder in which a person binges and purges Someone with Bulimia binges first, and purges after Unlike anorexia, people with bulimia know they have a problem

Bulimia Bulimia often results in tooth decay, and increased blood pressure Teens must gain self-confidence to beat bulimia and have a positive body image

Anorexia vs. Bulimia Bulimia Anorexia -ages 14 to 18 -look very very very thin -deny behavior Bulimia -ages 15 to 24 -look normal weight -know they have a problem but don’t want help -more common than anorexia

What makes people this way? -Media -Bullying -Body image-how you feel about yourself -Beware of diet ads
