Your Junior Year Careers Part-time Job What do my parents think? http://media.collegeboard.com/digitalServices/video/ycg/Homepage_Intro.webm What are my friends doing? Research, Research, Research Narrow down career and college choices. Not sure?.... Career assessments, interest inventories, job shadowing Research colleges that have your intended major or program using www.CFNC.org or www.Collegeboard.org There are many resources to help you research colleges and careers, most are online. If you are not sure where to start, completing a interest inventory or career assessment may help with exploring your options. This is important to do the first semester of your junior year, this will provide time for you to prepare and register for standardized testing, improve your gpa, get involved with extracurricular activities, visit colleges, talk with recruiters or participate in job shadowing.

What to look for when researching colleges Programs/Majors Campus Size Preferred Test Number of Applications received vs. accepted Scholarships specific to the school Average GPA Location Cost Admission Requirements (Animated/interactive slide-ask students what should they look for when researching colleges-click to bring up the list) When you use research tools such as CFNC or Collegeboard, they provide useful information without all the advertisements that the actual college website has. Even though it’s a great idea to visit the website, college research tools are much more user friendly.

(What do you see?) The college website is great, but its also for current students, professors, alumni has lots of pictures and marketing! The website is great to use to find out about guest speakers who will be coming to the campus, pictures of student activities and the campus as well as the clubs and activities that student participate in. Finding the information you need to narrow your choices down is easier to navigate with the tools we just went over

CFNC-tabs on the left side make finding information you need quick and easy and if you want to save the search this option is also available. Most of you created this account your freshman year. You can complete interest inventories, career exploration, college exploration, FASFA and so much more! Remember the log in info user name=Last Name, First initial, Middle initial and the last two digits of your graduation year Ex: GunnTT03 and your password is your student/lunch # Important for CAW

Collegeboard, nation wide college searches, college comparison tool, planning help, register, study and practice for the SAT in addition to similar tools that CFNC offers

Your Course Selection GPA & Transcript Graduation Requirements English 4 Credits Math 4 Credits Science 3 Credits History 4 Credits Health/PE 1 Credit ===================== Total # of Credits 26 Credits Foreign Language 2 Credits required for 4 year college True or False Honor courses and/or AP courses are required for all colleges and universities? The minimum GPA required for NC Public Universities and Colleges is a 2.5 The final grades you earn your Junior year will be the first grades colleges/universities will see when you apply FALSE TRUE Extracurricular Activities Clubs Volunteer Community Involvement Part-time job Play T/F So after you explore these schools you begin to notice some of the requirements and the average numbers that colleges are reporting. And then you begin to think about your current situation. Your course selection, your gpa, extracurricular activities. Just think the grades you make your Junior year will be the grades that colleges get on your transcript because these grades are what colleges see as you begin to apply to colleges the 1st semester of your Senior year! College applications will ask for 3 things: transcript, gpa and a test score (ACT/SAT). Look at your handout to learn how GPA is calculated. TRUE

Timeline for testing & college preparation JUNIOR YEAR SENIOR YEAR 1st semester 2nd semester Work on GPA Take PSAT/ASVAB Extra-curriculars ACT- (free for Juniors) SAT Scholarship search Retake ACT/SAT/ ASVAB as needed Take Accuplacer College applications Finalize scholarships and financial aid Acceptance letters There are free workshops to prepare students for college testing (Miss Webb). Pay attention to announcements! Check the guidance webpage frequently for college application and scholarship information. Use the summer between Junior and Senior year to study for SAT/ACT/ASVAB

Your Turn Group Time Break into 5 groups you have 10 minutes to work on the assigned search Share what you learned in your group CFNC/Collegeboard/ WHHS CFNC log-in-lastname firstinitial middleinital and last 2 digits of graduation year (16)
