The Progressive Movement Fixing the problems caused during the Gilded Age/Industrial Revolution

Muckrackers Writers and photographers who helped spread the word about the plight of immigrants and urban life. They helped force the government to make changes By 1900 America was pushing for change

What were the goals of the Progressives? Women’s suffrage Main leaders: Susan B. Anthony, Alice Paul, and Carrie Chapman Catt Equal Rights (NAACP starts) Protection for Workers Protection for Consumers Help for immigrants

How did Progressive’s help workers? Limit hours per day/week. NO child labor Help Unions gain power Workers compensation Safer working conditions Job protection (can’t be fired without a cause)

How did Progressives want to help immigrants/poor? Health and Safety codes Triangle Shirt Waist fire brought an outcry for changes. 150 women killed because they were locked inside a burning building. Progressive Era Roosevelt believed everyone deserved a “Square Deal”. A square is EQUAL on all sides. What did Roosevelt mean by a square deal? Everyone would have a chance. He would fight misconduct by businesses Everyone had an EQUAL chance

Progressive Era How did Roosevelt provide a square deal? Used the Sherman Anti-trust act to fight monopolies Helped the coal-miners win arbitration with the owners. Made the government step in to help all citizens. Not just the business owners.

Progressive era: conservation How did Roosevelt protect and develop America’s Natural resources? Had the federal government pay for irrigation and land development. Started the US forest service which managed the timber and forest lands. Saved 100 million acres of forest land, created 5 national parks, and 51 federal wildlife preserves.

Progressive era: Roosevelt v. Taft How did Taft and Roosevelt differ? Against Roosevelt’s wishes Taft attacked the high tariff but failed when he signed a bill that barely cut taxes. Taft ‘s choice for Secretary of the Interior sold many federal lands for development. The best of Taft: Brought twice as many suits against companies as TR. Surpassed TR in conservation Established Children’s Bureau

Progressive Era: Wilson Wilson won the election of 1912 because the Republican vote split between Taft and TR (who started a new “Progressive Party”) Wilson shared many of TR’s ideas.
