Making Healthy Food Choices Chapter 9 Section 1 Making Healthy Food Choices

Choosing Food Wisely Why do you eat? -Not because “I am hungry” - meet nutritional needs - satisfy appetite - supply body with energy. Hunger- is a feeling of physical discomfort that is caused by your body’s need for nutrients. Appetite- A desire for food that is based on emotional and other factors rather than nutritional need.

Choosing Food Wisely Basal Metabolic Rate- the rate at which you use energy when your body is at rest. The higher your BMR, the more calories you burn. Your level of activity affects your caloric needs. The more active you are, the more calories you need.

The Foods You Choose Why do we choose certain foods? Personal preference-because they taste good. You may like something that another person wont. Cultural Background- Different cultures eat different things. A Korean breakfast may include soybean soup and rice. On the other hand, a Mexican breakfast may include tortillas and beans. Time and convenience- A busy schedule may lead to meals that are prepared quickly or fast food. Friends- Friends may influence you to eat foos you may not normally eat. The media- You are bombarded with information about food constantly- in advertisements, news articles, diet books, and more.

Evaluating Food Choices Food Labels are very important when choosing foods. The information on a food label includes nutrition facts, nutrition and health claims, daily values, and freshness dates. Food labels are required on most foods by the United States Food and Drug Administration.

Daily Values Recommendations that specify the amounts of certain nutrients that the average person should obtain each day. Calculated for the average person who consumes a total of 2,000 calories a day. % Daily Value are on all food labels.

Open Dates Labels on food are marked with open dates. These dates give you an idea of how long the food will be fresh and safe to eat. “Sell-by”- the last date the product may be sold. “Best-if-used-by”- how long the product will be at peak quality. “Do-not-use-after”- the expiration date. Do not consume.
