2 Essential Question How can the types of foods consumed affect your overall health?

3 Why Nutrition Matters? To make healthful food choices, you must first learn about nutrition, the process by which your body takes in and uses food. Your body relies on food to provide it with nutrients, substances in food that your body needs to grow, to repair itself, and to supply you with energy. The energy body receives from food is measure in calories. A calorie is a unit of heat used to measure the body uses and the energy it receives from food.

4 What Influences Your Food Choices?
People eat for two reasons: hunger and appetite. Hunger is the natural physical drive to eat, prompted by the body’s need for food. When you’re hungry, you may feel tired or lightheaded. Once you satisfy your hunger, you may feel better. Appetite is the psychological desire for food. Think of how the smell of fresh-bake cookies tempts you, even if your full.

5 Food and Your Environment
What in your environment influences the food you eat? Family and culture. If your family eats most meals at home, this will influence what you eat. Friends. If your friends always go to McDonalds after school, you’ll probably eat McDonalds too. Time and money. People with busy schedules may chose foods that are quick and easy to prepare, such as convenience foods and microwavable meals. Advertising. Advertisers try to influence your decision about food.

8 Nutrients Everything you eat contains nutrients. Nutrients perform specific roles in maintaining your body functions. Your body uses nutrients in many ways: As an energy source. To heal, build, and repair tissue To sustain growth To help transport oxygen to cells To regulate body functions

9 Carbohydrates Carbohydrates: Starches and sugars present in foods
Most nutritionists recommend 55-60% of daily caloric intake come from carbohydrates Examples Sugars-fruits and milk Starches- whole grains, seeds, nuts, rooted vegetables (potatoes) Body converts all carbohydrates to glucose (simple sugar), which is the body’s main source of energy

11 Proteins Proteins: nutrients that help build and maintain body cells and tissues Made up of long chains of substances called amino acids Examples: Animal Products- fish, meat, poultry, eggs, milk, cheese, yogurt Other sources: beans, peas, nuts Used to make enzymes (control rate of chemical reactions), hormones (regulate activities of different cells), and antibodies (destroys disease-causing organisms). Also used for energy

12 Fats Some fat in the diet is necessary
Fats are a type of LIPID: fatty substance that does not dissolve in water Provides more than double the energy of carbohydrates and proteins Saturated vs. Unsaturated fats Saturated- usually solid at room temperature; increased risk of heart disease (butter) Unsaturated- usually liquid at room temperature; reduced risk of heart disease (olive oil) Transport vitamins A, D, E, and K in your blood Most nutritionists recommend eating only moderate amounts

13 Other Nutrients Vitamins Minerals Water
Compounds that help regulate many vital body processes, including the digestion, absorption, and metabolism of other nutrients Water-Soluble vitamins- dissolve in water Fat-Soluble vitamins- dissolve in fat Minerals Substances that the body cannot manufacture but that are needed for forming healthy bones and teeth and for regulating many vital body processes Water Vital to every body function Carries nutrients to cells and waste away from cells Lubricates joints and mucous membranes Allows you to swallow and digest foods, maintains normal body temperature (through perspiration)

Label each section with the correct title Draw and label at least 4 foods that you eat normally that fit into each category Draw and label at least 2 physical activities you enjoy on the back sheet.

Each group may have up to 5 members. Each group will be given all five products and their nutrition labels. Each Group will work together to match the correct information to the Nutrition Label.

Answer Essential Question – How can the types of foods consumed affect your overall health? Complete the Chapter Review Exit Slip and hand in it when completed. If not completed, then finish for homework.
