Certification

SHVL History Organized in 1993 to unite volunteer leaders from healthcare facilities within an organized structure. Non-profit, educational group for healthcare volunteer leaders in the southeast. Certification Program for its members was started in April, 1988.

SHVL Purpose To increase the knowledge and improve the skills of individual members To emphasize the value of qualified leaders of Volunteer Services by establishing and maintaining professional standards and ethics To be a resource of support and information to leaders of Volunteer Services in healthcare organizations To attract new persons and retain skilled persons in the field of Volunteer Services Administration To promote leaders of Volunteer Services as integral members of the health care team

CDVS – Certification for Directors of Volunteer Services Purpose To enhance the value of qualified Leaders of Volunteer Services in healthcare facilities through increased knowledge and skills development. To establish and maintain the optimum level of professional standards and a quality of ethics consistent with all disciplines in the healthcare services arena. To provide an organized structure of an optional peer Certification Program for eligible members who have a desire to enhance their personal contribution to healthcare and have an interest in self-development to maintain a higher level of vocational competence. To recognize individuals who have demonstrated expertise in their field and maintained high professional standards.

Why Would I Want to Do This? Establishes to your supervisor and CEO as well as colleagues and other healthcare professionals that you have an advanced level of knowledge, skill and proficiency in your field. Personal pride that you have been certified as being among the elite in the field of healthcare volunteerism. Application process establishes the professional standards and ethics of your program. Requires systematic reflection and analysis of existing program.

CDVS(SHVL) or CAVS(AHVRP)? It is a personal preference which you select and some choose both. They are similar, yet different – explore both to see which works best for you. Generally no one in hospital administration understands the difference in certifications in our profession. AHVRP tools can be of assistance in helping prepare for both certifications. Professional certification by premier professional organization. Significant cost difference - $50 for CDVS vs. $250 for CAVS. Some comment that CDVS is a good first step towards CAVS or other certification.
