4 4 Steps to Certification
Attain the required work experience – 2 years in driver training Attend the Essential Instructional Skills for Professional Driver Trainers course Pass CDT certification exam Complete application and certification exhibit and submit to NATMI To earn professional certification, each applicant must complete four steps. Meet the Experience Requirement: In order to qualify for the CDT designation, you must have at least two years experience as a trainer. Fulfill Educational Requirements - NATMI schedules classes to help candidates earn their certification. The required courses are scheduled throughout the United States each year to give students many dates and locations to choose from. Our full schedule of courses is available on the NATMI website Pass Certification Exam - The final phase of the process is to take and pass an exam. Exams are given in your area by proctors from NATMI. Prior to the exam, each applicant is sent study material to prepare. Complete Application and Prepare Exhibit - After you finish the Instructional Skills for Professional Driver Trainers course and the exam, there is a formal application that must be submitted with an exhibit of professional accomplishments. The exhibit includes items such as: verification of employment, any memberships in professional organizations, special achievements, a workplace organization chart and a copy of your written job description. Each applicant is required to submit letters of recommendation, one from a supervisor and two from industry colleagues, which should be included in your exhibit. 7 Renewal In order to stay current, certified individuals must renew every 3 years from the date of their initial certification Renewal applicants must accumulate 30 points in the 3-year cycle. A workbook documenting points earned must be submitted to NATMI prior to the renewal due date After an individual has become certified, in order to retain a current certification, they must renew every three years from the anniversary date of their initial certification. Renewal is based on a point system. Individuals must earn 30 points in the 3-year renewal cycle. Points are earned through continuing education and industry involvement at the local, regional and national level. Prior to the 3-year renewal due date, the applicant must submit a workbook, which documents their point-earning activities. Along with the workbook, the applicant must submit documentation that substantiates their point-earning activities, such as letters, invoices, membership cards or certificates. UCF is the certifying and accrediting body of NATMI Issues Continuing Education Unit (CEU) certificates for NATMI courses Administers certification application and exhibit review process Administers and grades certification examinations Oversees the quality of NATMI programs and trains new instructors The University of Central Florida (UCF) oversees the certification process as an independent third party to ensure the integrity of the process.
