Lois Lowry ,Lois Lowry has written over 30 books for children and young adults and is a two-time Newbery Medal Winner. Lois Lowry was born in Honolulu, Hawaii, and attended junior high school in Tokyo, Japan. Her father was a dentist for the U.S. Army and his job entailed a lot of traveling. Lowry still likes to travel. At the age of 17, Lowry attended Brown University and majored in writing. She left school at 19, got married, and had four children before her 25th birthday. After some time, she returned to college and received her undergraduate degree from the University of Maine. Lois Lowry didn’t start writing professionally until she was in her mid-30s. Now she spends time writing every single day. Before she begins writing a book, she usually knows the beginning and end of her story. When she’s not writing, Lowry enjoys gardening during the spring and summer and knitting during the winter. One of her other hobbies is photography, and her own photos grace the covers of NUMBER THE STARS, THE GIVER and GATHERING BLUE. Lois Lowry has four children and two grandchildren. She lives in Cambridge, Massachusetts.

The New Child represents new life throughout the community The New Child Gabriel The New Child represents new life throughout the community

The Sled The sled represent on of the memories that The Giver gave Jonas.

The River

Theme The theme of this is diversity. As Jonas had begin to grow up he paid no attention to the differences between people, some members of the community thought that it was rude and disrespectful to pay close attention to the different people, lastly as Jonas acquired memoirs he later realized that some differences are to be celebrated and not ignored.

Conflict (Man vs. Self) The conflict arises when he realizes that he receives memories. He begins to mentally revolt certain restriction placed on the community and its people.

Conflict & Resolution The Main conflict throughout this book is that when Jonas comes to the realization of what is happening to the new children during the “Release”, he realizes that this is actually killing them instead of making them live longer The resolution is when Jonas takes the New Child Gabriel and left the community in order to save him from being “released”

Characters Jonas, the protagonist, is an eleven year-old boy at the beginning of the book The Giver, known in the community as the Receiver of Memory, already knows what Jonas will discover Jonas’s father is a Nurturer, a job that fits his personality. He cares for infants in their first year of life. Jonas’s mother does what is required of her in her assigned job and in her role as mother to Jonas and Lily. ]Lily, Jonas’s sister, is a Seven when Jonas is an Eleven Asher is Jonas’s best friend. Fiona is Jonas’s friend Larissa is an old woman in the House of the Old. The Chief Elder is the person whose job it is to announce the assignments of the Twelve's.

Reflection Over-all I think that this is a very good book. It taught me not only to not to look at people who are different to you but to respect them because the might be special in some type of way. This book also opens up a new door for me because I learned how different people live and the variety of cultures. I think that all student should someday read this book because it is very good and I would recommend it to people.
