What is an Expository Writing Prompt? This type of writing prompt does NOT ask you to write a personal story. Instead, it asks you to inform the reader truthfully and factually about a specific topic. -Factual -Has Specific Information to prove the thesis statement -Is Organized -Gives YOUR Opinion -Explains Reasoning

OER Expository Writing Thesis Statement: The thesis statement is that sentence or two in your text that contains the focus of your essay and tells your reader what the essay is going to be about. (You must restate the question in your thesis statement.) Supporting Statement: Using text evidence or a compelling example, prove your thesis statement. Closing Statement: A final sentence that wraps up your response. Your expository paper is built around your thesis statement (controlling idea). This is the last sentence of your first paragraph. The supporting statements become the body of your paper. In one to two paragraphs you will prove your thesis statement with compelling examples. The closing statement becomes your closing paragraph and wraps up the paper for your audience.

STAAR Expository Writing Rubric (Score 4) Organization and Progression – The introduction and conclusion establish the controlling idea (thesis statement) and every part of the paper supports the controlling idea. Ideas in the paper are logically organized and presented in a way that clearly supports the controlling idea. Development of Ideas – Very clear and well-presented facts and details clearly and consistently support the controlling idea of the paper. Use of Language, Conventions, and Grammar Writer’s word choice and language is clear, concise, and appropriate to the expository writing task.
