Fountas and Pinnell Benchmark Assessment

K W L FOUNTAS & PINNELL What do you What questions Connector FOUNTAS & PINNELL K W L What do you What questions already KNOW? do you have?

Non-Negotiables for TESTING at each grade level WHEN? Handout : K-8 District Assessment Calendar Classroom options – getting through entire class Substitute days - Russ HOW? Using a mixture of fiction AND non-fiction Getting 3 levels INDEPENDENT (on report card) INSTRUCTIONAL FRUSTRATION

BINDER ORGANIZATION (tests all copied) WHAT? BINDER ORGANIZATION (tests all copied) KIT ORGANIZATION (where to start lists ready) Get familiar with books at your “targeted/word list data” level Get familiar with comprehension questions for these books Optional Data Management CD (recording data) Enter data in Pearson Inform = June 8th staff meeting

Administering the Benchmark Assessment Consistency at Bingham is key : Start with Where to Start Word Lists (get these done ahead of time) Start with introductory sentence(s ) on front of book. (sets a purpose for reading) Pay attention to oral and silent reading parts of the task Definite shift from QUESTION & ANSWER to NATURAL CONVERSATION about the text Be consistent with scoring comprehension within your class Have conversations with your colleagues about answers to comprehension questions Using writing component (does take more time – but does provide an additional piece of information about student comprehension) Make sure to use a number of different rubrics to determine levels (accuracy rate, fluency score, comprehension conversation, etc.) Finding an INSTRUCTIONAL LEVEL when numbers don’t add up

What do you need to make this a successful adventure? Time (Russ – sign up for sub days) Resources (Instructional team) -binders Modeling (Instructional team) – before sub day Schedule with us……..Before your testing day Preparation (you) TUTORIAL Video available in your Fountas and Pinnell kit Team discussions (you & grade level) Other questions?????
