4 Coding and Scoring Errors:
Accurate Reading: Do not mark or place check () above word Substitution: Write the substituted word above the word Self-Correction: Write the error over the word, followed by SC Insertion: Write in the inserted word using a caret Omission: Place a dash (-) above the word Told: Write a T after or above the word Take a look at your “Coding and Scoring Errors at-a-Glance” handout…to the right are some of the most commonly used codes.

You will find information about: Skills your Level N readers will possess What you can expect a Level N text to look like. Take a look at your Level P handout. You will find information about: Skills your Level P readers will possess What you can expect a Level P text to look like Any Questions?

7 Let’s Practice! You should have a blank running record form in front of you for the story, “Snake Myths” (Level O). Listen for errors and practice coding as the story is read. Be sure to listen through the comprehension assessment and make notes of the student’s responses. There will be time to discuss and ask questions when the assessment is complete!

Writing Samples: Let’s take a look at some writing samples... In front of you there is one Level N, one Level U, and one Level Q writing sample. Read through these samples and practice scoring them. Let’s Discuss! Score the writing samples using the guide below… Writing About Reading: 0 Reflects no understanding of the text Reflects very limited understanding of the text Reflects partial understanding of the text Reflects excellent understanding of the text
