1941 The novel opens in Sighet. Elie is twelve years old. He lives with his parents (shopkeepers) and three sisters: Hilda Bea Tzipora

1944 - May All Sighet Jews forced from their homes and told to line up in the streets Elie's family marches to the "little ghetto.“ The Wiesels join the last group of deportees aboard a railway cattle car.

1944 – Late May Convoy reaches Birkenau Elie & Chlomo spend their first night in camp.

1944 – July Summer Guards send Elie and Chlomo to Auschwitz. They meet Stein of Antwerp there. Elie and Chlomo march to Buna. Elie is tattooed A-7713 on his left arm.

1945 – January Elie = surgery in the Auschwitz infirmary. Chlomo and Elie run with evacuees to Gleiwitz They and others board open cattle cars for a ten-day ride to Buchenwald in central Germany.

1945 – Late January Cholomo Wiesel gets sick, eventually dies Elie feels guilty since he has feelings of relief

1945 – April April 1, 1945: Elie is liberated with the arrival of U.S. troops. Elie gets sick from eating too much food
