Essential Questions How do we develop our students to become good communicators? How might we best measure and track their progress? How can we use data to drive instruction and intervention when appropriate? aiken county public school district
Objectives of Easy CBM Session Utilize Easy CBM process to guide and enable sound instructional decision making Establish an objective database and tracking tool for student progress that enables us to discuss intervention where appropriate Identify and focus on instructional methods and techniques that consistently relate to reading success Increase familiarity with Web based tools and resources to develop a process approach to teaching Phonics in an impactful way aiken county public school district

Weak Fluency – 2nd grade stumble In order to understand what we read, we have to read at a speed appropriate to get meaning from the text (comprehension) In 2nd grade reading , your students should be reading 50-60 WPM at the beginning of the school year and 90 WPM by the end of the year. aiken county public school district

Progress Monitoring How can we monitor students’ progress? Phonics With Focus on Fluency There are 1,006,311 words in the English language. A body of knowledge, known as phonics, consisting of the 26 letters used to symbolize 44 English speech sounds, with approximately 70 common spellings for these speech sounds, will allow us to break the alphabetic code. Phonemic Awareness is the knowledge and ability to recognize the words and are made up of combinations of individual speech sounds. Improved fluency comes when these sounds are recognized automatically, blended into a word, which is then given meaning in the text. aiken county public school district
Fluency What is reading fluency? ”Ability to read text quickly, accurately, and with proper expression.” Report of the National Reading Panel (p. 3-5) Why is fluency important? ”Fluency provides a bridge between word recognition and comprehension.” National Institute for Literacy (NIFL), 2001, p.22 Fluent readers are able to focus their attention on understanding text. aiken county public school district
Essential Components of Fluency Accuracy and Automaticity of Decoding Process Readers decode words accurately Readers decode words effortlessly Reading Speed or Rate Readers read with an age or grade level appropriate rate Reading speed is adjusted for purpose and text difficulty Expression and Prosody Readers read with smoothness, phrasing, and inflection. Comprehension Readers comprehend important ideas in connected text. aiken county public school district
Setting Up The Hard Drive (Brain/Thought Process) Reading is based on phonics It is the link between written and spoken language When you see the letter ‘t,’ you know that it makes a /T/ sound. If it is followed by an ‘i’ and an ‘m,’ you know the word is Tim. This is phonics ~ An understanding of phonics is crucial to the ability to: Read Fluently. Phonemic Awareness is recognizing a variety of sound units. Phonemes are small units of language like: ‘sh,’ ‘th,’ ‘ch,’ ‘wh.’ aiken county public school district
First Things First What is a Vowel? There are 26 letters in the English alphabet, but there are only five vowels: A, E, I, O and U. What about vowels make them so special? A, E, I, O and U are the only ones that represent sounds you can make just by using voice and mouth. Hold short A sound for five seconds. Notice the mouth does not need to move. Phonics Instruction-Should be taught- Systematic and explicit phonics instruction significantly improves students’ reading comprehension. aiken county public school district
The Vowels Drive the Words Rule: When there is one vowel in a word it usually says its short/soft sound. Mark it with a smile. When there are two vowels in a word the first vowel says its’ name and the second is silent. Mark it with a mean face. aiken county public school district
Blend-it/Multi-Sensory Create a word from the blend ladder: ba – t be – t bi – t See the vowel, touch the vowel, hear the vowel, Sweep the word together in chunks with your finger. Complete the word and give it meaning in context of a sentence and literary text. aiken county public school district
