Community and Crowdfunding What is The Funding Network? Live Crowdfunding Hackney Giving Live Crowdfunding for Communities

What is The Funding Network (TFN)? The UK’s first formally constituted open giving circle. Founded in 2002 by Dr Frederick Mulder CBE and 3 friends to create a greater impact on issues they cared about by pooling their funds with others, learning about people’s needs and having fun in the process. Started in London, TFN events are hosted in the City, across the UK and in 13 countries. 350 TFN events have raised over £9.8m for 1,400 charities across the world

Live Crowdfunding Standard format: informal networking ‘formal’ event 6 minute pitches from 4 charities, each seeking the same amount of money (£3K-£6K) 6 minutes Q&A from the audience pledging session run by an experienced MC announcement of funds raised No minimum wealth requirement No requirement to give at the event Impact report from charities to donors 12 months after Replicable and adaptable model suited to community foundations and organisations

Hackney Giving Live 3 events raised £30,000 for 9 charities from 140 donors (92 were repeat donors) Included corporate match funding Small, local organisations rooted in their community, with limited capacity to raise funds yet responding to real, pressing needs Supported organisations : Evergreen Play Association; Sev Necati Training; The Crib; Hackney Shed; St Mary’s Secret Garden; Volunteer Centre Hackney; Creative Lifestyle; Kimnara; Circle Sports Tapping into local pride

Crowdfunding for Communities Funding with few restrictions and fast turnaround Opportunities to establish new relationships Capacity building in the local voluntary sector Leverage: 62% leveraged additional funding from other sources* 43% attracted new donors Low barrier for participation Power of the collective, in one room, in that moment Raising awareness of local issues and urgent needs, involving donors from nomination through to pledging: 65% of members feel better informed* 57% of members made new contacts A fun night out! *From the 2011 TFN UK Stakeholder Survey
