USDOE: 2011-2012 SCHOOL YEAR 49 MILLION ENROLLED 3.5 MILLION STUDENTS EXPERIENCED IN-SCHOOL SUSPENSION 1.9 MILLION STUDENTS SUSPENDED OOS FOR AT LEAST 1 DAY 1.6 MILLION SUSPENDED MORE THAN ONCE 130,000 EXPELLED 11.3% OF ALL SECONDARY SCHOOL STUDENTS MORE THAN DOUBLE THE RATE OF MID 70’S

WHAT HAPPENED? DISPROPORTIONATE IMPACT: 3 TIMES MORE LIKELY THAT A MINORITY STUDENT IS SUSPENDED THAN CAUCASIAN NHCS DATA: 5447/25139 BLACK CHILDREN ENROLLED (21.6%) 2118/3383 BLACK CHILDREN SUSPENDED (62.6%)

WHAT HAPPENED? JUVENILE JUSTICE 2010: 2.1 MILLION YOUTH UNDER 18 ARRESTED 1.3 MILLION DELINQUENCY CASES (17% INCREASE SINCE 1985) ANOTHER 150,000 STATUS OFFENSE CASES 400,000 ADOLESCENTS EXPERIENCE INCARCERATION EACH YEAR 200,000 UNDER 18’S TRIED AS ADULTS

WHO IS AFFECTED? POOR (DISPROPORTIONATELY CHILDREN OF COLOR) VICTIMS OF ABUSE AND NEGLECT SPECIAL EDUCATION DISABILITIES LBGTQ YOUTH
