Alcohol use is evidence of the need for intervention. The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, (SAMHSA) measures “recent use” as any use within the past 30 days. Not all who have tried alcohol are in need of treatment, but early intervention is crucial for stopping the progression of risky behavior before it becomes the child’s new normal (Liddle, Rowe, Dakof, & Henderson, 2004).
