Child Development 1 year

Social/Emotional Shy/nervous with strangers Cries when parents leave Hug and kiss parents, familiar people and pets Bring things to “show” other people Begin to be helpful around the house Develop a range of emotions (may have tantrums, show aggression by biting, etc.)

How parents can help Give your child time to get to know people Give your child lots of affection Don’t push your child into doing something it doesn’t want to do

Cognitive Has favourite things/people Uses simple gestures (shaking head for no) Responds to simple spoken requests Start to use objects correctly Are curious about everyday objects and how they work. Your child may try turning knobs, pushing buttons, and opening drawers and cupboards Can find an object that they watch you hide. For example, if your child watches you cover a teddy bear with a blanket, he or she can "find" the teddy bear by removing the blanket

How parents can help Spend time encouraging wanted behaviour instead of punishing unwanted ones Sing songs with your child and encourage him to sing along with you. Play his favorite songs and music in the house and car regularly and he may eventually start singing along by himself. This activity helps promote memory and word identification. When you can, offer your child choices: This will help him to feel more independent and learn to make confident decisions that affect his day Identify Everyday Noises

Linguistic Makes sounds with changes in tone (sounds like speech) Says simple words Tries to repeat words you say Can say at least 3 words Recognize their own names

How parents can help Read to your child everyday Build onto what they’re trying to say Tell stories Follow your child's lead Never criticize or be mean with child who is struggling

How Parents Can Help Let children draw and use toys that encourage small motor skills (draw, toys that fit into each other etc) Filling up and dumping (a cup filled with blocks etc) Allowing them to help dress and undress themselves Plenty of fun to feel objects (mud, play dough etc)

nutrition A child aged one year should be getting many of their vitamins and nutrients from fruit, vegetables, breads and grains, meats and especially dairy. A healthy balance of all 5 food groups will ensure healthy development. When feeding a 1 year old make sure there are no hard foods, and its all cut into small bite sized pieces to ensure there is no choking. Breakfast example - 1 cooked egg - 1/2 cup whole milk - half of banana, sliced - a few large strawberries cut
