Mixtures 8.P.1.1

Warm up A compound can be separated: A. physically B. chemically C. Both D. neither

Mixtures- Mixture- made up of two or more substances that are combined physically Substances in the mixture do not change or combine chemically The makeup of a mixture may vary Mixtures exist in all states of matter example air is a mixture of gases

Types of mixtures Heterogeneous mixture- substances are not distributed evenly throughout. (you can see the different parts) Example: captain crunch, Italian dressing Homogeneous mixture- substances are evenly distributed. (you cannot see the different parts) Example: Kool-Aid, salt water, sugar water

Solutions Solution- a homogeneous mixture in which one substance is completely dissolved in another. Solutions are usually liquids Solutions have 2 parts Solvent- substance that does the dissolving Solute- substance that dissolves

Separating mixtures Sifting- separating solid parts by particle size using a screen Filtration- separating solid from a liquid in a heterogeneous mixture Evaporation- separate a solid from liquid using heat to evaporate the liquid
