1 Chemical Interactions
Unit 1 Chemical Interactions

2 Mixtures When two or more materials are put together it is called a mixture. Example: Pasta + Sauce = Pasta and sauce mixture

3 Types of Mixtures Not all mixtures are solid + solid. Examples:
Air is a mixture of many gases Salad dressing can be a mixture of liquids Solutions are a special mixture between a solvent and a solute.

4 Solutions When two substances (a solute and a solvent) are mixed, but the solute dissolves in the solvent, the mixture is a solution. Example: Salt + Water = Saltwater Solution

5 Parts of a Solution The solute is the substance that dissolves. It is soluble. That means it can dissolve. The solvent is the substance that does the dissolving.

6 Dissolving: The Particle Level
In a solution, the solvent particles hit the particles of the solute and break the bonds that hold the particles together. This is called dissolving. When the solute is completely dissolved the broken off particles are spread evenly in the solution.

7 Particle Model Step 1: Step 2: Solvent Solute Step 3: Step 4:
