2 What is a Mixture? A mixture is combination of different substances, the amount of the parts can vary.

3 Types of Mixtures Homogeneous – looks the same throughout
Heterogeneous – can see the different parts

4 What is a Solution? Solution – a liquid mixture
Solubility – how well something dissolves Solvent – the liquid doing the dissolving (water) Solute – the solid being dissolved (salt)

5 Separating Mixtures Depending on what the mixture is made of there are several ways to turn it back into the basic parts. 5 ways Filtration Evaporation Magnetism Chromatography Distillation

6 Examples of Separation
Filtration – large particles stay on the filter paper or in the funnel, while small passes through. Evaporation – heating a solution until the solid remains in the dish.

7 Examples of Separation
Magnetism- using a magnet to attract some of the mixture. Chromatography – uses special paper to pull the solvent up and the parts are attracted at different strengths.

8 Examples of Separation
Distillation – the solvent is heated and some of it evaporates into a gas. The gas is collected, cooled and condensed back into a liquid.
