Open Access publishing: introduction Free

Overview of Open Access publishing Open Access (OA) publishing is about … Free and open access to research outputs – Google Scholar, Core, Aston Research Explorer, etc HE funder requirements – HEFCE, RCUK, European Commission, etc Institutional and researcher benefits … Enhanced citation rates Increased research impact Aston’s OA Policy covers all journal and conference publications REF 2020 will only accept research outputs that meet HEFCE’s OA discoverability and accessibility requirements Sharing research freely and openly to all readers online and has significant social, economic and scientific benefits It forms part of the Government’s commitment to transparency and meets funder requirements that publications be OA compliant – HEFCE, RCUK, etc (details later) OA publishing … will benefit you and Aston University as your citation rates will be enhanced and it can increase research impact Aston’s OA Policy … states that all journal and conference publications meet the same level of OA compliance

Within 3 months from publication (early online) Full-text version Accepted Author Manuscript aka ‘In press’/‘Post-print’ Publisher PDF Is there an embargo on OA accessibility? Yes No HEFCE / REF 2020 Compliance necessary OA compliant by default For Green compliance you must upload the final accepted, ie. ‘in press’, full-text article: This is: the author’s final version has been peer-reviewed but without the final journal formatting (… MS Word doc?) In PURE this is called the ‘Accepted Author Manuscript’ (aka post-print), not ‘Submitted Manuscript’ (aka pre-print) or ‘Final Published Version’ Keep a word.doc version esp if online template being used. Full-text should be uploaded within one month of acceptance

HEFCE’s Green OA requirements All journal articles and published conference proceedings (with ISSN) must be Green (if not Gold) … books excluded Since 1st April 2016 – upload AAM within 3 months of acceptance for REF 2020 eligibility Also maximum embargoes on accessibility to full-text apply – 12 months for STEM 24 months for AHSS Embargo can be in place during REF exercise Applies to both corresponding and co-authors Books excluded for Ref purposes but may be able to add individual chapters to Pure

It also details information on research staff, awards and activities, projects and research groups. Information does not appear on Aston Research Explorer unless it is in PURE. https://research.aston.ac.uk Keep your profile and research information up to date!

PURE Home Page Access personal settings here! The big GREEN button – the place to go for adding new content! Choose what type of information you want to see with the buttons along the top bar! Your messages – find out what is going on in PURE! Choose what area of PURE you want to focus on and click the button to take you there – you can also add new content through these tabs! Edit your profile by clicking this button… REMEMBER Your profile info transfers to Aston Research Explorer for the public to see! Choose the tab to see overviews of your research, your profile or your supervision duties Access help on PURE here including online manuals!

Adding a full-text article to PURE Click on ‘browse’ to find the file for upload or drag the file to the box Select the correct document version: - Green this will be ‘Accepted Author Manuscript’ (peer reviewed version) - Gold this will be ‘Final Published version’ (Publisher PDF / Version of record) For Green OA - if you are unsure of the embargo date the library will check this and complete it for you For Gold OA - the license type will usually be ‘CC-BY’ aka ‘Creative Commons: Attribution’ Make sure you press SAVE when you exit or your work will be lost!
