1 Open Access, Research Funders and the REF Open Access Team, Library

2 Open Access Unrestricted access to (and re-use of) research outputs, in particular journal articles and conference papers arising from publicly funded research. Gold (paid for) Open access journal or open access option in a subscription journal - article is immediately freely available. Payment of an up front fee or ‘Article Processing Charge’ (APC) Green (free) Publish then self-archive (usually accepted final version) in online repository if the publisher permits. Possibly an embargo period. University policy is to go Green wherever possible

3 Research Councils RCUK – revised policy from 1 st April 2013 Journal articles and conference proceedings arising from RCUK grants must be open access (either by Green or Gold routes) Authors can no longer build APCs into grants but should access the block grant awarded to their institution RCUK permit a 6 month embargo period for Green open access RCUK require CC-BY licence - CC-BY allows anyone to share and remix works, including for commercial purposes, as long as attribution is given

4 Deposit papers associated with grants* into Europe Pubmed Central (6 months embargo; CC-BY licence) Provide funds for open access (managed by the Library) Sanctions for non-compliance Wellcome Trust monographs and book chapters from 1 st October 2013 Arthritis Research UK, Breast Cancer Campaign, the British Heart Foundation, Cancer Research UK, Leukaemia & Lymphoma Research joining this fund 1 st October 2014 *Includes awards that pay part salary of any author Wellcome Trust and Other Funders

5 All papers must include acknowledgement of the funding that supported the research. Recommended format ‘This work was supported by the XX Research Council [grant number xxx]’ RCUK mandate inclusion of funder reference Funder Acknowledgement

7 OA and the post-2014 REF HEFCE policy issued in March 2014 http://www.hefce.ac.uk/news/newsarchive/2014/news86805.html Policy will take effect from 1st April 2016 Articles and conference proceedings (only) will need to be open access in order to be eligible Policy is based on Green open access Embargo period is 12 months for STEM subjects

8 OA and the post-2014 REF In order to be eligible... “author’s final peer-reviewed manuscripts must have been deposited in an institutional or subject repository on acceptance for publication”... within 3 months of the date of acceptance

9 What are staff required to do? Email details of every paper accepted for publication to: research-openaccess@glasgow.ac.uk and attach the accepted final version Library open access team checks funder details, publication, embargo and copyright details and advises whether payment of an APC is required.
