I ran. Is this a complete sentence? Identify the subject. Identify the verb. What type of word is “I”? Pronoun: a word that replaces a noun. Ex. I, you, he ,she.

Mary ran to the park. Identify all the nouns. What is the subject of this sentence? What is the verb? What does the word, “to,” do in this sentence? Preposition: establishes a relationship between the subject, verb and object in a sentence. Usually indicates time or place. Ex. To, from, for, at, on, before, after, etc.

Mary ran to the park near the new house. How many prepositions are in this sentence? What are they? What new noun was added to the sentence? What does the word, “new,” describe? Adjective: a word that describes or modifies a noun.

Mary ran slowly to the park near the new, blue house. Identify all the adjectives in the sentence. What does the word, “slowly,” describe in this sentence? Adverb: a word that describes or modifies a verb. Hint - it usually ends in “ly.”

Let’s Review! Pronoun: a word that replaces a noun. Ex. I, he she, you, they. Preposition: establishes the relationship between the subject, verb and object in a sentence. Adjective: a word that describes or modifies a noun or pronoun. Adverb: a word that describes or modifies a verb.
