“We learn to be Wise” Learning Journals September 2016

Why? Encourage and develop children’s ability to monitor, reflect and evaluate their own learning. Learning journey, what they are learning, why. Research enquiry supported by team from ELC- effective feedback and assessment Making Thinking Visible- huge investment

Feedback has a huge positive impact on pupils learning

Education Scotland “The process of profiling can be a powerful motivating influence for a young person, encouraging each individual to achieve their best. It can help to give individuals a real sense of personal ownership of their own learning and achievements, promote their understanding of their own skill development and enhance a range of skills, including literacy, and other attributes and capabilities. “

Why? Provide ongoing information for parents regarding their child’s progress “How effectively do we support parents and carers to participate in, contribute to and understand their child’s learning? How effectively do we communicate about progress, attainment and achievement?” How Good is Our School 4

What can you expect? “Parents are looking for reports that give a clear, rounded personalised summary of their child’s learning and progress. They want good quality conversations with teachers that feel personal and specific to their child. The paperwork needs to support this rather than becoming an end in itself. Report card formats and other arrangements for reporting should avoid jargon.” Education Scotland 2013

Why? Create a document that can be looked back on and support “pupil voice” school reports.

Improve the collation of wider attainment & achievement data Why? (inspires nad encourage)

Why? Develop with children/parents/carers a document that can be used to record, evidence and share learning. These learning journals will be made available to children, parents, carers at all times and celebrated at parent consultations. Parents are encouraged to contribute. Each young person, with appropriate support through dialogue with a member of staff, and from discussions with their parents as appropriate, will Comments- value of homework…….

Provides an agenda for discussion between learners and those teaching and supporting them.

What will it look like? 4 sections –literacy, numeracy, H&W, other areas, wider achievement Might look messy Include test data Individual “Aha moments” and successes as they occur Partnership – teacher/pupil/peer/parent &carer Wider Achievement Written by pupils in conjunction with staff, rather than by staff about a pupil.
