How they impact on our performance when playing sport Communication Roles & Responsibilities Team Dynamics Social Factors How they impact on our performance when playing sport

Learning Outcome I will learn how to explain the positive and negative impact of social factors on my performance in various activities.

Communication “Communication is the ability to convey information to team mates/coach through the exchange of verbal speech, signals or action during practice and performance”

What might communication be used for? Communication can be used to give: Tactical Advice Encouragement Feedback Information on shots played Information on the direction of play Opposition positions

Importance of communication

Explaining the impact of communication on your performance Football/Hockey During a hockey or football game a player who is in space calls to one of their team mates to pass them the ball. The player who has the ball immediately makes the pass and keeps possession for their team. The player who has made the call will have more space and time on the ball. Volleyball During a "time out" in a volleyball match the coach tells the main hitters to spike the ball at one of the opposition players who isn't good at digging the ball. When the game restarts the hitters immediately do this, resulting in more points for their team because the weak player is either digging the ball out of court or is unable to play an accurate pass to the setter.

Explaining the impact of communication on your performance Negative Impact (Volleyball) In Volleyball when a ball is served into the space between two players neither of them calls for the ball. Subsequently, this will result in one of two things happening: Both players don't go for the ball and a point is scored off the serve or both players do make a move for the ball and they collide with each other once again resulting in a lost point.

Team Dynamics: Definition ”Is the interaction of performers within a team or group. It is mainly to do with making the team more effective than the sum of its parts”.

What makes effective team dynamics? Trust & belief in each other Defined roles. Everyone in the team understands their job Co-operation and support amongst players Shared goals (creates greater unity and focus) Motivation and self belief in players Clear and effective communication http://www.bbc.co.uk/education/clips/zhwgd2p

Team Cohesion This is where players are drawn to a common goal. Coaches often talk about teams needing time to “gel” in order to perform at their maximum potential. It has been evidenced time and time again that skill and ability will only get you so far, groups of players must have a bond. This develops naturally as a result of coaching and day to day interactions.

How does good team dynamics Impact positively on performance? If there is camaraderie between players in a team then everyone will be motivated to do well. Because all the players in the team work well together this means they can rely on each other, especially during difficulties. For example, in hockey if a defender is beaten by an attacker they know one of their fellow defenders will quickly cover for them and make the tackle. Also, if a team has strong dynamics they will be more effective when executing strategies and plans. Because all the players are "on the same page" everyone will have a clear understanding of the plan and their role in it e.g. in volleyball when defending a spike the front court players will know it is their job to jump together and block the spike, but the back court players will be on their toes ready to pick up the ball if a tip is played.

How do poor team dynamics negatively impact performance? If a team has poor dynamics then camaraderie won't be as strong and some players will lack the motivation to try their best. This will cause frustration in other players because they want to win and they will be covering for their team mates. Arguments will start and players will lose focus on the game, this could result in silly mistakes or not tracking the opposition. All of this gives the other team a greater chance of winning as they will exploit weaknesses.
