Blackboard Collaborate Ultra- Part 2 Presented by: Kevin Dooley, M.S.

The Virtual Classroom Once in the classroom you will need to: See how many of the students have cameras and headsets with microphones Some won’t and will have to use the “Chat” system, which is good enough For those who do, have them: Lower volume to reduce feedback from the microphones Have a one to two page student quick reference for new students loaded and have them follow it to become familiar with procedures Remind students that the session is being recorded and that includes their language and comments

What You See Students will see the same thing, but when you click on the icon above, you will see the options on the next slide

Three Important Links 2 In the bottom middle section you can click on the microphone (second to left) to activate your mic. It will show up and down movement inside the icon when you talk, which indicates that it is working. Next, is the webcam on your computer. You can choose to activate it and it will bring you up. *Note: Make sure that the room you are in doesn’t have anything that you don’t want students to view. The last one is the hand. It makes it so that the students have to raise their hands to speak In the upper left corner you will have links to start recording and to report issues On the lower right corner, you will have all your settings and documents that you want to share 1. 3

Breakout Rooms Notice that you can have Ultra randomly assign students to each group, or you can do it individually. You can also re-assign as needed

Student Presentations When I did it in my class this summer, I had students in report writing bring up pdf copies of their draft assignment and the class and I did a critique. The critique included grammar, spelling and content. Students really liked it and they scored higher on the final drafts of their assignments. When you click on the above icon, you will see a list of the students in class. To the right of their names are three dots. When you click on the three dots next to the name you can assign them as a presenter . Then they can put one of their documents on the screen

Students follow the same procedure as the instructor: Students or you can stop sharing by clicking on this symbol

Don’t forget to stop recording your session before leaving the room
