„Hey, do you know what ‚upside down management‘ is „Hey, do you know what ‚upside down management‘ is? – I learnt about it in my English class today.” Jayne Kyte Dip.TESOL

Task one…. IMAGINE

Work in pairs… You & your partner work for the Advertising Department of Migros Supermarkets One of your competitors – Aldi, is currently running a very successful Christmas advertising campaign Your boss has asked your team to design a campaign to rival your competition Discuss your ideas & put together a campaign plan to present to your group

So why do Business English coursebooks include case studies? Objectives of Case Study lessons… Brings the real business world into the classroom Ss practice vocabulary & functional language from the unit To enhance communication skills (both verbal & non-verbal) To train managerial communication skills such as meetings Ss develop critical thinking To encourage collaborative learning & team working Ss improve their organizational skills

So why don’t they always go the way we had planned? Topics are not relevant to our students’ working lives Topics are bland, students don’t find them interesting or motivating Topics are meaningless & highly specific Ss may not have the necessary functional language to deal with the discussion effectively Ss have little or no imagination – especially after a hard day’s work or at 07:30 am!

Talking Points – The way forward….. Discussion pointers help to get students talking about the concept or approach and personalising it to their own situation Each Talking Point is based on an interesting concept, process or approach that is relatable for any student in any business profession Input on the topic with examples from the business world introduces the topic to the students Task allows students to apply the concept to their own work, and provides the opportunity to use language from the unit. Business English you can take to work today

Business Result Talking Points Overview…. Interesting concepts, approaches & processes which is relatable for any student in any business profession Motivating input on the topic with examples from the business world Discussion tasks get Ss talking about the concept/approach and aids personalisation to their own situation Students practice all 4 skills whilst reviewing the vocabulary & language from the unit

Going Viral – Pre-intermediate Volvo Trucks & Van Damme - 86'736'000+ views https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M7FIvfx5J10 Watch this video and as you watch, note the emotions you are feeling…. Now why do you think that video went viral?

Talking Point lesson plan Going Viral (Pre-intermediate) – Pre-Task activities Jigsaw reading task (each student receives one of the points, reads it & summarizes for the group who make notes) Group discussion – how are the tips different or similar to traditional ways of advertising? Students categorize the tips in the order of least to most important and share ideas with the other groups Personalisation – which videos do you share with family and friends & why?

Talking Point lesson plan Going viral (Pre-intermediate) – Task activities Ss work together to plan a short video to promote their company or a place they know well (e.g.: Switzerland) Ss decide on the subject , decide which of the tips would be important for their video In groups, Ss plan the video, indicating timing of each section Ss present their plan to the group, finally the group decides on the best plan

The ‘gig’ economy - Advanced Life in the Gig Economy https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R7pEL6uh1cI Ss watch this simple explanation prior to the lesson, whilst completing a simple task sheet to focus students on key elements of the video

Talking point lesson plan The ‘gig’ economy (Advanced) - Pre-task activities Ask Ss to think about the difference between careers in their father’s (or grandfather’s day) as oppose to careers now Use the discussion questions 1 & 2 as a springboard for brainstorming Ss work in pairs to complete lists of pros & cons for a ‘gig’ career, finally scanning the text for any ideas they have missed Pairs join another pair, compare their answers & discuss questions 4 & 5

Talking Point lesson plan The ‘gig’ economy (Advanced ) - Task activities Dictate the quote by Arun Sundarajan (see handout) Ss check their work & reflect on the quote for a minute or two Ss spend 10 minutes thinking of something they would do as a ‘gig on the side’ using the grid to help them organize their ideas (if they are unable (or too shy) to think about themselves, they could use the example of a colleague or family member) Ss discuss their ideas within the whole group who ask questions to help develop the ideas. Ss finally vote on which idea they have the most confidence in

Key points to remember Talking Points work when…. Your students are interested to learn more about the topic Your students are motivated & well-prepared to take part in the discussions & tasks Discussion pointers get students to talk about the concept & are aimed at personalisation The tasks are realistic & relevant to the students’ own reality The topics are of interest both inside & outside of the classroom

And finally…. Oh and by the way, should you want to learn more about ‘upside down’ management – then you can watch this video on your way home! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VyBa6vJzBeE&t=41s
