14 Study Session Facts Practice skills learned by doing problems, exercises and essays Aim to build a clear understanding by connecting areas of knowledge Don’t study after 11.00pm Divide time equally between subjects Stick to it ! Take study breaks Don’t procrastinate

15 Studying “Some succeed because they are destined to: most succeed because they are determined to.”

16 Creating a Timetable Study sessions just don’t happen when you feel like doing them. They need to be scheduled on an organized timetable. Most people need two hours of study time for each hour of class.

17 Practice Timetable Create a practice timetable for your studying this week. Monday Tuesday Wednesday Thursday Friday Saturday Sunday 3:00 4:00 5:00 6:00 7:00 8:00 9:00

18 Study Strategies Flashcards Peer quizzing or self-quizzing
Read and reread notes Rewrite, underline or highlight notes Summarize Outline or make a graphic organizer Create questions Make to do lists and prioritize

19 Creating Flashcards Flashcard video
Create your own flashcard from something you have learned today or need to study for finals Think-pair-share How do you use flashcards? Do you use them in all classes? Will you start using them? What did you learn from the video that you can use?

20 Read, Rewrite, Underline, Highlight Notes
Taking notes---what does this look like? Video Notes should not be complete sentences, should be brief (shorthand) Notes should be in your own words Use pictures when applicable Use abbreviations and symbols to make writing more efficient Focus on key words and concepts

21 Read, Rewrite, Underline, Highlight Notes
Take 1 minute to answer the question on your paper. Each person in your group needs to share one thing that you wrote down in answering the question. Pick one person from your group who will share the best reason that your group came up with. Discuss as a class some of the great ideas!

22 Quizzing Strategies Worksheet
Read the following short story and come up with two questions that you could ask someone about this article in order to check for understanding. “Clever kids: A police officer found a perfect hiding place for watching for speeding motorists. One day, the officer was amazed when everyone was under the speed limit, so he investigated and found the problem. A 10 years old boy was standing on the side of the road with a huge hand painted sign which said “Radar Trap Ahead.” A little more investigative work led the officer to the boy’s accomplice: another boy about 100 yards beyond the radar trap with a sign reading “TIPS” and a bucket at his feet full of change.”

23 Quizzing Now, turn to your neighbor and ask these two questions. Make sure your neighbor has their paper turned over so that they are not looking at the article. Share other quizzing strategies as a class

24 Summarize Brain Dump: write as many ways as you can come up with to summarize your learning! Hint: we have done some throughout this week! 2 minutes! Timer

25 Summarizing Strategies
Outline, 1 sentence summary, KWL chart, key points, graphic organizer, AHA, Venn Diagram, text message, tweet, 3-2-1 Why should we summarize?
