Safeguarding Introduce staff as not all of them will know who we are –get them to introduce themselves, name, setting, what they had for breakfast

To develop an understanding of the different forms of communications that can be applied to your role To be able to identify why we communicate To be able to identify some of the methods of communications we use To be able to identify possible barriers to communication

3 Communication We ‘re going to be looking at: What is communication?
Why do we communicate? How do we communicate? What is effective communication? Why is effective communication so important? Why is it important to think about how we say something? Suggest they make notes on the handouts

4 Communication Ice-breaker activity
Individually, how many of the sayings can you guess from the clues word puzzle, identify as many as they can check all have pens / pencils and handout the sheets

5 Communication What is communication?
Communication – first pic could suggest an exchange of ideas, transmitting info, passing info from one person to another WHY? How?

6 Communication Why do we communicate? How do we communicate?
In your groups, how many different ways can you identify? feedback Why? Learners to suggest HOW? Number the participants 1,2, 1,2 etc., use flip chart paper and pens for activity. 10 mins to come up with ideas then each group to feedback comparing their answers St Christopher’s – should come up with PECS (ask them to explain)

7 Communication Effective communications Effective communications video
Watch the video and look at the types of communications that are happening – watch the practitioner, what is she encouraging the children to do, how is she encouraging their development, their language, their problem solving skills. Give them some paper & pens so they can write their ideas Learners to feedback, MC/AT to write responses on flip chart

8 Communication Paired activity on effective communication
Non-verbal communications How do we communicate without the use of speech? How does the way we say things change the meaning? Non verbal video Number the learners, 1,2,3,4 and pair the numbers. Paper and pens/pencils One to give information, one to follow the information then present results in turn. Then look at NVC’s, show the video and suggest they think about how the way we say things can alter the meaning Look at punctuation – Rachael finds inspiration in cooking her family and her dog; let’s eat Grandma;

9 Communication Barriers to communications
Can we identify barriers that may exist? Do we create barriers? Encourage them to identify barriers that may exist in their setting? Language – Is English their home language? Do we think about the words we use, do we always get down to their level? What about noise levels, temperature – too hot, too cold. Link to values – respect, voice, opinions

Think about how you approach the children you work with Do you get down to their level Do you consider your facial expressions – or theirs Tonality:- Do you think about your tone of voice Do you think about the speed at which you speak Words:- Do you consider the words you use when speaking to adults Do you consider the words you use when speaking to children Do you use different language (words) when speaking to different ages / people What about your gestures
