Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

Childhood King was born in Atlanta, Georgia on January 15, 1929

Segregation During the time that Martin Luther King was growing up much of the south was segregated. Busses, schools, and even bathrooms were segregated.

Young Martin King was a very smart young man. He skipped tow grades in high school and entered college at a very young age. Martin became a minister.

Family King married Coretta Scott King in 1953 They had four children togther

Montgomery Bus Boycotts On December 1, 1961 Rosa Parks was arrested for not giving up her seat on a city bus. A bus boycott took place in Montgomery led by Martin Luther King Black citizens did not ride the bus until laws were changed and blacks could sit were they wanted on city busses.

The Civil Rights Movement Martin Luther King was the leader of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference and the main leader of the civil rights movement. This group created non-violent protests to change unfair laws. Dr. King organized many marches, protests, and gave speeches. The people involved in the Civil Rights movement were fighting to have the same rights given to white citizens in the United States.

The March on Washington In 1963 Dr. King and many other civil rights leaders organized the march on Washington. The march was organized to call attention to the many problems facing black people. At this march in Washington D.C. Dr. King gave his famous I have a dream speech.

Assassination In 1968 Martin Luther King JR. was assassinated in front of his hotel room. He was in Memphis, Tennessee to help sanitation workers who were on strike because of unfair pay and treatment. He was only 39 years old.
