Vitamins and minerals are one of the four food groups - carbohydrates proteins fats and oils vitamins and minerals Gr 6 Natural Sciences and Technology – Term 1, Topic 2

Different types of vitamins We are able to get our vitamins and minerals from: the food we eat; vitamin supplements; the sun. Today we will be learning about Vitamins A, B, C and D. Gr 6 Natural Sciences and Technology – Term 1, Topic 2

Vitamin A Sources of Vitamin A: egg yolk, liver, green beans, peas, fish oil, carrots, pumpkin, butter. Functions of Vitamin A: It helps our eyes to produce a pigment that helps us to see in dim light. It helps your body to fight infection. Gr 6 Natural Sciences and Technology – Term 1, Topic 2

Vitamin B Sources of Vitamin B: brown rice, whole-wheat bread, cereal, vegetables, meat. Functions of Vitamin B: there are seven types of Vitamin B and each type has a different function. Vitamin D Sources: the sun, egg yolk, fish liver oil, milk and margarine. Functions: It helps our bodies to absorb calcium and phosphate. Minerals Four of the most important minerals are – Sodium - It helps to keep the correct balance of water in the body. - It is found in most food, but not in fruit. Minerals Zinc - It helps to the body to grow. - It is found in meat, fish and poultry (chicken and other birds). Iron - It helps to make red blood cells that carry the oxygen through the body. - It helps to give energy to the body. - It is found in red meat, liver, beans & green leafy vegetables.
