Coalition Building for Tolerance The ultimate goal for this coalition building /training manual on tolerance is to support the development of collaborations across Europe that that will seek to end anti-Semitism, and all other forms of hate. intolerance and discrimination and promote equality, acceptance, acknowledgement, respect and appreciation

Goals of such a coalition: The Charter for Compassion sets goals as not just the elimination of negative behaviors and attitudes (hate and intolerance) but also the promotion of the positive attributes from tolerance to acceptance to acknowledgement and ultimately to appreciation. For ENAR (The European Network Against Racism) the language is equality For Coexister the word they use to state their goal is respect.  For some in the US working on systemic racism the language is equity and justice (Wolff et al).. The addition of justice is a key part of setting a goal of equity.

Ten Steps to Fight Hate: A Community Response Ten Steps to Fight Hate: A Community Response.(The Southern Poverty Law Center) The ten steps cover all the levels of the social ecological model: 1. Act 2. Unite 3. Support the Victims 4. Do Your Homework 5. Create an Alternative 6. Speak Up 7. Lobby Leaders 8. Look Long Range 9. Teach Tolerance 10. Dig Deeper

Why is coalition building one critical approach to intolerance in Europe? Issues must be addressed at all levels Must engage members from all the major Institutions, all the diverse communities and ultimately the society as a whole. a critical partner must also be those most affected by the issue, those who are the targets of hate, discrimination and intolerance.

ENAR: the European Network Against Racism : One example of a coalition the explicitly issues of racism and discrimination into its mission is “ Our mission is to achieve full equality, solidarity and well-being for all in Europe. We want to allow all members of society, whatever their skin colour, ethnicity, sex, gender, religion, disability, age or sexual orientation, to participate and be included in society. Our take on this? We combat racism and discrimination based on colour, ethnicity, national origin, nationality, religion, culture, language or legal status. We envision a vibrant and inclusive society and economy that embrace equality and diversity and the benefits of a racism-free Europe.”
