1 What are Equality and Diversity?
What is equality? Equality is ensuring individuals or groups of individuals are not treated differently or less favourably, on the basis of their specific protected characteristic, including areas of race, gender, disability, religion or belief, sexual orientation and age. Promoting equality should address discrimination in all of the aforementioned areas. Bullying, harassment or victimization are also considered as equality and diversity issues. What is diversity? Diversity aims to recognise, respect and value people’s differences to contribute and realise their full potential by promoting an inclusive culture for all staff and students. Newcastle University Equality Strategy and Action (Revised February 2017) The Equality Strategy is our public declaration of our commitment to develop a fully inclusive University community which recruits and retains talented staff and students from all sectors of society equally. It also sets out how we, at Newcastle University, plan to meet the duties placed on us by equality and diversity legislation and to follow best practice in all that we do: including employing our staff, providing teaching and learning to our students and being engaged with local communities
