What is a PA? A healthcare professional educated/trained to do many of the tasks traditionally performed by physicians Licensed to practice medicine with supervision of a licensed physician Concerned with preventing, maintaining, and treating human illness and injury by providing a broad range of health care services sammy
What it takes! PAs are educated in the medical model designed to complement physician training Must take a national certification examination developed by the National Commission on Certification of PAs Must log 100 hours of continuing medical education every 2 years Recertification every ten years Graduation from an accredited physician assistant program(usually 2 year program) Passage of the national certifying exam are required for state licensure kelli
Brief History Dr. Eugene Stead of the Duke University Medical Center in North Carolina put together the first class of PAs in 1965 Selected Navy corpsmen who received considerable medical training during military service October 6, 1967, Duke University PA program graduated the first PA students Today there are over 79,000 graduates of PA programs. emily
