Implementation of the Mzansi Golden Economy (MGE) Programme Initiated in 2011, the MGE programme is a strategic investment mechanism aimed at: Creating and sustaining jobs Stimulating demand Building audiences Developing human capital Research, monitoring and evaluation The programme operates by: Maximising existing investments Identify new opportunities through open calls Creating new platforms for growth Developing institutional mechanisms to support key objectives

Building Demand Art Bank A national rental agency for contemporary and traditional South African art, intended to be a stimulus for the visual arts economy: - Progress to Date:   A project manager was appointed in April 2016 and an administrative assistant Exhibition launch is planned for end July 2017 Mzansi Golden Market TORS for expansion of the MGM advertised Transfer of hosting to SITA underway

Building Demand Cultural Precincts Funding ring fenced for planning and research of Phase 2 of the Newtown Cultural Precinct Funding ring fenced for the revised feasibility study and phased business plan for Red Location Cultural Observatory Primary Objective of the SACO is to advance research in field of Cultural Information SLA signed with NMU Draft 5 year research agenda prepared Workshop on 5 year research agenda to be hosted on 19 February

Audience Development Cultural Events 22 Flagships approved for support (3 National & 19 Provincial Flagships) 1st adjudication of the open process took place in May and June 2017. The process focused in CE / TV. 37 CE Projects approved Touring Venture In the 2016/17 about 89 projects were financial supported to the tune of more than R8 million. The majority of the beneficiaries were emerging community groups supported to tour nationally and internationally showcasing the diverse South African culture.

Audience Development Public Art Public Art refers to Static visual arts format installations such as sculptural and mural/mosaic accessible art in public spaces. The many advantages and social benefits if Public Art is that it makes the creative arts accessible to broader public for free with high quality, innovative showcases. Artists in Schools 300 artists placed in schools nationally

Audience Development Incubator Programme Eight currently running in the following provinces Gauteng, Free State, Mpumalanga, Western Cape and Kwazulu Natal The plan is to increase Incubator programme to 14 in the 2017/18 financial year

Provincial Flagships A framework for provincial flagships has been approved as follows: DAC will continue to contribute R4 million per Province to the recommended provincial events. The total contribution to Provinces will amount to R36 Million. Provincial flagships must be confirmed annually by the respective provinces and provinces have since confirmed and made adjustments where needs be. The Mpumalanga Provincial Government replaced Mpumalanga Comes Alive with Mpumalanga Cultural Experience. Unlike the other Provinces Gauteng Provincial Government took a decision to split the R4 Mil to 3 projects rather than 2 projects.

Open Call Documents for the 2017/18 financial year The open call process for the current financial year is not yet released Both the guidelines and the application forms are being updated as per the recommendation of the stakeholder engagement through the MGE Road Shows that took place in the previous financial year.

Open Call Documents for the 2017/18 financial year The MGE Road Shows took place as follows in all the 9 Provinces: Limpopo 15 April 2016 (265 attendees) Western Cape 10 May 2016 (150 attendees) Northern Cape 13 May 2016 (130 attendees) Mpumalanga 12 August 2016 (180 attendees) Eastern Cape 23 August 2016 (170 attendees) North West 04 October 2016 (115 attendees) Gauteng 14 October 2016 (352 attendees) Kwazulu Natal 26 October 2016 (169 attendees) Free State 30 March 2017 (110 attendees)

Open Call Documents for the 2017/18 financial year Some of the recommendation provided by the sector during the Road Shows consultations are that: The department should review the guideline and application forms with the purpose of further simplifying the documents. Improve on communication with applicants. Translate the MGE documents into all official languages including brail. Target more disadvantaged communities in future MGE Road Sows. Capacitate the MGE programme. All these recommendations have been taken into consideration while updating the on the progress of the project
