Why would the Mormons have built this statue?

How did the Mormons make the desert bloom? To understand the initial and wider contextual reasons why the Mormons were able to successfully settle in salt lake city To be able to explain Brigham young’s role in the Mormons success

What did they think of the great salt lake when they reached it? “My feelings were such as I could not describe. Everything looked gloomy and I felt heart sick. Weak and weary as I am, I would rather go a thousand miles farther than remain in such a desolate and forsaken spot as this” - Young’s sister-in-law, Harriet, 1847

How did the Mormons make a success at salt lake? TASK How did the Mormons make a success at salt lake? Read p.78 – 81 in the white text book and complete your A4 sheet How important was Brigham Young? What other factors were important?

What were the Mormon failures? The Mormon War and failure to create a state In 1848 the US occupied New Mexico, where Salt Lake was situated, and the US government refused Young's attempt to have a 'free and independent' Mormon state of 'Deseret'. In 1857 he sent in 1,500 troops - so the Mormons prepared for war, but eventually came to a compromise. As a result, Salt Lake City became the US state of Utah.
