8 George Washington Heads the New Government

Key Issue between parties: The power & size of federal government in relation to state and local government Two major parties developed Political parties were seen as danger to the unity of the nation

Federalists (Hamilton) Democratic-Republicans (Jefferson) Strong central (federal) government Mostly northerners Strong state governments Mostly southerners

13 Civil War Constitution-10th amendment
States all rights not taken by Feds Fed govt wants to disallow new states from entering as slave states South is upset…why Eventually slave states will be out#ed and become free states South argues it is a state’s right to choose slave or free.

14 Civil War South decides to leave the union North says, “no” Party analogy The civil war was actually fought over a state’s right to choose slavery or free, then a state’s right to leave the union. Federal vs. State Authority issue!

15 The Alien and Sedition Acts
Residency requirement raised for American citizenship Sedition Act set fines and jail terms for anyone expressing opinions damaging to the government

16 Virginia and Kentucky Resolutions
Resolved in their own states that the A & S acts were unconstitutional because they violated the 1st amendment VA & KY refused to carry that law and in fact Kentucky nullified them The A & S acts and nullification in Virginia and Kentucky proved the power struggle between federal and state was still on going

What was the key issue between the first political parties (Federalists vs. Democratic-Republicans)? Power & size of federal government compared to state and local government How did VA & KY try to challenge the power of the federal govt? Passed resolutions stating they would not enforce the Alien & Sedition Acts

18 Mormon Persecution Mormons went west on the Oregon Trail to escape religious persecution Persecuted for their belief in polygamy Polygamy- having more than 1 wife The Mormon religion began in upstate NY Moved to Ohio then onto Illinois Joseph Smith, Mormon leader, was murdered in Illinois Brigham Young urged Mormons to move farther west Mormons settled on the edge of Salt Lake
