3 Strengths and weaknesses of Britain in the early 1920s (text pg 48-9)
Victorious from a major war .....came at a terrible cost An empire and a major European power,, with great international prestige and diplomatic influence Mass casualties and a demographic shortage of men of marriageable age Rising living standards for many Demobilisation of millions of men New consumer goods, leisure and mass entertainment National economy crippled by war debts and needing to move back to peacetime production Stable and modern society Disruption of international trade Socialism and the trade unions both strengthened

4 Political winners and losers in the early 1920s (text pg 49)
In 1923 and 1929, Labour governments were formed, although they only lasted for a short time By 1918 the Liberals were divided and in decline This becomes worse as more Liberal voters shift to Labour

5 Why did DLG lead a coalition government? (text pg 49-50)
During the war the coalition had been seen as patriotic and effective A government combining cross party talent would help restore normality To stay in power, DLG had no choice – the Liberals were split and Labour refused to join a coalition

6 Why was DLG in a weak position? (text pg 49-50)
His power rested on his former political enemies rather than his own party supporters Wartime spirit of co-operation would not last forever He needed to be successful He had no strong political base of his own The radical promises he made e.g. “homes fit for heroes”, would be hard to deliver
