August 19, 2013 English IV Bellringer: Rewrite the sentences with correct punctuation. Make sure you can identify the punctuation problem in each sentence. This next chapter has a lot of difficult information in it, you should start studying right away. Mr. Nguyen has sent his four children to ivy-league colleges, however, he has sacrificed his health working day and night in that dusty bakery. This computer doesn't make sense to me, it came without a manual. AR discussion: All English IV students must earn at least 10 points. All Honors English students must get 15.

August 21, 2014 ACT Prep Bellringer: Comma Review Use the handout to record your answers. Today we will continue the group work that you completed yesterday in class. The goal is to make sure that each student writes at least TWO sentences in the story AND that you correctly use as many comma rules as you can. Scoring: +1 for each correct sentence with comma and -2 for each sentence that is incorrect.

This Friday we will have a TEST over conciseness, comma usage, and Chapter 2 in Breaking Through, Stages of Reading. English IV August 21, 2013 Bellringer: Write 3 comma rules based on the observations of sentences. Record your rules on your bellringer sheet. Continuation of our work with Chapter 2 in Breaking Through. Finish reading the model reading assignment on pages 50 – 54. Remember you must answer the “Thinking Before Reading” questions on page 50. On page 55, answer the reflect and think critically questions.

Review of “Hunters in the Snow” 7th Period – you need to get into groups and discuss: Perrine, Page 99:#4, #7, #8 5th Period – Character Analysis We will get into groups but I will assign. Listen for instructions: (1) You will be given a character name. (2) you will get into groups with students who have the same character. (3) Complete a close reading for this character and character analysis. (4) Next discuss alliances, and irony.

AP English IV August 22, 2013 How did you read/prepare your reading of the poem I gave you yesterday? Today I will present several different strategies to help you deal with poetry you might find dense or difficult to access. Paraphrasing for understanding: Write out the poem in prose form; turn difficult metaphors into similes; investigate all figurative language. (understand the difference between literal and figurative). Always identify Speaker, Tone, and setting. You will need to annotate and complete analysis to do this. Consider the Structure of the poem: Read the poem aloud, notice rhyme (internal and end); meter that may form patterns; turns that might be represented by lines or stanza’s. Develop a theory about the poem (plausible thesis).

English IV August 23, 2013 Chapter 2 Quiz Please spend about five minutes looking through Chapter 2. It is multiple choice and short answer. When you are finished continue to work on your in class essay from yesterday. I would like that done today.

August 23, 2013 AP English IV Let’s Finish “My mistress’ eyes are nothing like the sun” Each group should report out. You should make note of the procedure we used to “unpack” this poem. Independent Reading Please work on your triple entry journal. You will submit your triple entry journal September 16. I will pick these up on September 4 to check your work thus far. You should have at least 5-8 entries.
